Helsinki Summer 2015 Hyperlapse (4K)

This summer I decided to make a hyperlapse video as a summer project mostly for fun. Most of these places are quite well known here in Helsinki and I wanted to make something in glorious 4K, and this was is the answer. I’ve spent a lot of time working with this, burned my skin in the sun and filled up my 64GB SD card with RAW images for the video. The outcome is quite cool and I hope at least those who live in Helsinki would appreciate it.

As for the workflow, every frame was shot separately. The gear I had Canon 6D with a 17-40mm f4 lens + ghetto tripod. In most cases I extended my tripod to max and used it as a ghetto monopod. This made it easier for me to shoot the scenes as moving a monopod is far easier and faster than moving a tripod.
Nearly everything was shot in RAW, only one or two scenes were jpegs from the beginning.
The editing part started by going through images in Lightroom and edit one picture of a sequence and then copying the settings over to all images. This way I got better quality jpegs for use. These were then imported to AAE where I stabilized the image sequence and exported as 5,472 x 3,648(20 megapixels) AVI video. Stabilization was achieved with Warp Stabilize and 2-point tracking. Not all material was usable so I probably have around 1min 40seconds worth of video in total made this way.
When I have now the AVIs, I just made a 4K composition and added the clips in there. As they were such a good quality, I was able to limit out the black bars stabilization causes as well as zooming more into some of the clips, leaving outside non-stabilized footage.
From AAE I exported the whole 1min 17second video as AVI. This single file takes up 54GB of space! Threw that into Premiere and exported compressed yet with a high bitrate. Video finally done! 🙂

I want to give a shoutout to someone who has helped me with the project.

Robin Walberg – Doing this alone would be boring as hell, but Robin came with me on half of the sessions. He also helped with the composition of shots while doing his own 4K video recording. Check him out here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Str0kdGaming
